The New Aegis Surveillance Sensor
Postoperative Opioid-Induced Respiratory Depression Sensor

Postoperative Opioid-Induced Respiratory Depression (POIRD) is a potentially debilitating condition that can go unrecognized in patients, leading to respiratory failure and death.

Analyte Logic (AL) is developing a sensor system, called Aegis, that recognizes the signs of POIRD before it can cause adverse effects in a patient. The in vivo Aegis Sensor, together with the Optode Engine (OE), gives medical device OEMs a new method to detect and halt POIRD.

The Aegis Sensor comprises a catheter composed of a PO2 sensor, a PCO2 sensor, and a temperature sensor. The 500 micron indwelling catheter provides continuous monitoring and surveillance for POIRD.

At this point, AL has developed and performed animal studies with the PO2 and temperature sensors. The results were spectacular, with a correlation to independent blood gas measurements of greater than 0.993. We are currently working on the PCO2 sensor to add to the Aegis catheter.
